This data service contains annual time series of CO2 emissions from fossil fuel combustion, a major source of anthropogenic greenhouse gas emissions.

World CO2 Emissions from Fuel Combustion database contains annual CO2 emissions from fuel combustion and related indicators for more than 140 countries plus regional aggregates. Emissions were calculated using IEA energy databases and the default methods and emission factors given in the 2006 GLs for National Greenhouse Gas Inventories. This edition includes annual data for 186 countries/regions, generally from 1960 to 2015 (OECD) and from 1971 to 2015 (Non-OECD), unless specified differently at the country level. The World CO2 Emissions from Fuel Combustion database includes the following seven files:

1) WORLD_BigCO2.IVT CO2: Emissions from Fuel Combustion (detailed estimates)
Detailed CO2 emissions by subsector and by product (47 products; 41 flow categories)

2) WORLD_CO2.IVT CO2Emissions from Fuel Combustion (summary)
Aggregated CO2 emissions by sector and by product category (5 product categories, 12 flow categories).

3) WORLD_CO2Indic.IVT: CO2 emissions indicators
30 CO2-related, energy and socio-economic indicators

4) WORLD_CO2kwh.IVT: CO2 emissions per kWh
13 indicators related to CO2 from electricity and heat production. Data are available from 1990 to 2015. 
(Please note that the CO2 emission factors from electricity generation are in a separate file and will be sent separately by e-mail after purchase. Also note that these emission factors cannot be downloaded using a data card.)  

5) WORLD_CO2Sector.IVT: Allocation of emissions from electricity and heat
CO2 emissions after reallocation of emissions from electricity and heat generation to consuming sectors.

6) WORLD_IPCC2006.IVT: IPCC Fuel Combustion Emissions (2006 Guidelines)
CO2 emissions from fuel combustion, with Reference and Sectoral Approach totals, as well as detailed split between emissions across the Energy, and Industrial Processes and Product Use (IPPU) sectors, as recommended in the 2006 GLs.

7) WORLD_ NonCO2.IVT: Emissions of CO2, CH4, N2O, HFCs, PFCs and SF6 (available only in the final edition)
CO2-equivalent emissions of six greenhouse gases across all sectors. Data are available for 1990, 1995, 2000, 2005, 2010, 2012 and 2014.

New! In the 2017 edition, 2 new data files are included (sent by e-mail after purchase):

1) World_GHGkWh.IVT: Extended emission factors for electricity generation
Completed with new factors, namely:

  • 2016 provisional emission factors for OECD countries, based on provisional electricity generation data (in CO2 per kWh of generated).
  • Correction factors for emissions induced by electricity losses in the grid (in CO2 per kWh of electricity).
  • Correction factors for emissions induced by electricity traded between countries for OECD countries (in CO2 per kWh of inland electricity).
  • CH4 and N2O emission factors for electricity generated (in CO2eq per kWh).

2) World_IEF.IVT: Implied emission factors
Emission factors for fuel consumption in other sectors than electricity and heat production (in CO2 per kg of fuel).

The new indicators are also available in an excel file, which is distributed after the data package has been purchased.

The service is updated twice a year - in April with preliminary OECD data and in September with World data.
